Psalm 56:13 (NIV) For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.
I don’t do very well in the dark; not even in my own room. I will inevitably stumble around and hit something that I couldn’t see. That’s why I love light. I love it so much that I don’t use sunglasses because it darkens the brightness of the light. I also have come to love the light that Jesus brings into our lives for the same reason. Before that Light came, we were in the dark and didn’t know it, although we were stumbling around trying to make sense of our lives. Before the Light, Jesus, came into our lives, we were like the walking dead. Graves and tombs are dark places and that’s where many of us were headed when Jesus rescued us.
The Word of God describes those that don’t know Jesus as their Lord and Savior as people who are in darkness (Matthew 4:16). The reason for that is because Jesus is literally the Light of the world (John 8:12). There is light in this world because God created the sun and the moon. But the sun and the moon cannot repel the darkness that people live in without Jesus. Only He can do that. That Light is so resplendent that it even overshadows the darkness of death. Death and darkness went up against Jesus when He was buried in the tomb, but three days later, death and darkness were overwhelmed with the radiant light of our resurrected Savior! Death and darkness fled that tomb and Light and Life filled it in their stead.
Now, we can walk in the light of life as the verse above so beautifully puts it. The light of life is none other than Jesus and walking with Him is walking before God in the light of life. If you have received Jesus as you Lord and Savior and are following Him daily, then you are not only walking before God in the light of life but have also become a child of the light (1 Thessalonians 5:5). The Light that is in you has defeated darkness and death and now you will walk in the Light for the rest of your earthly life and will be translated into the Eternal Light after your journey here is over. In heaven, there is no artificial lighting because it is not needed. God is the Light that will be shining and that we will be enjoying. It will be a brightness such as we have never experienced before. There will be no shadowy places or anywhere in all of heaven where you will be able to walk out of the Light, not that you will want to! What a glorious day awaits us then, but what a beautiful journey it is right now as we continue to walk daily before God in the light of life!
