Psalm 40:5 (NIV) Many, Lord my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare.

David was a man whose heart was after God. He was a man who sought the Lord with all of His heart and because He did, He experienced God’s love as well as His awesome power. God used him to defeat many of Israel’s enemies. As a matter of fact, David never lost a battle and he attributed all his victories to the fact that it was the Lord who enabled him to do it. That’s why he says in the verse of scripture above that many are the things that God has planned for “us.”  God has planned beautiful and wondrous things for us, His children, and we, the people of God, get to experience all those wondrous things when we love and fear the Lord from our hearts.

God has always been merciful to His people, but one of the things that I love most about God is that He makes it personal. He not only works wonders for His people, He works wonders for you personally. God is not a God of the masses. He is the God of each individual person. When you are saved, you are not then lost to the multitude of people that have been saved through the ages. God knows you individually. He knows you by name. Even though the Word of God describes those that make it to heaven as a great multitude that no one can number (Revelation 7:9), you will never be lost in a crowd. Here on earth it’s different with people. If you are part of a large church, chances are the pastor and leaders don’t know your name unless you are involved in some upfront ministry. It would be impossible for any pastor or leader to know all the people in a 5,000+ member church. But God is God and He knows us all personally and by name. Even though it’s hard to imagine how He can do that, the fact remains that He not only knows you and knows all the details of your life, but He knew you before you were formed in your mother’s womb (Jeremiah 1:5). That why in the verse above, David goes from speaking about the wonders He does for us in general to saying, "were I to tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare." In other words, David brought it home to speak about the many wonders that God had done for him personally.

God’s wonders are personal. As I look back on my own life, I can say along with David that God’s wondrous deeds in my life are too many to recount. He has done so much for me, starting when I was just a young boy. Even when I lost my way for a bit, His mercy and grace took over and His wonders never ceased. I’m sure it has been the same with you. God is so awesome and He’s so personally awesome. No one can compare with Him. When you are tempted to get discouraged or when your soul gets downcast, remember the wonders that the Lord has done for you, which are too many to tell, and turn your heart towards thanksgiving and rejoicing because you belong to a God who never stops working wonders on your behalf.
