Proverbs 18:10 (NIV) The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.

We’ve had a lot of storms lately and when they are coming, warnings can be heard on television, on the radio and through text messages to find shelter until the storm passes. It is good to have a shelter to run into when the weather gets violent. In the same way, it is also good to have a shelter to run into during spiritual storms and battles. The Word of God points to the best place to ride out the turbulences of life and of spiritual warfare. There is a strong tower that God has provided for us and that strong tower is the name of the Lord.

How is the name of the Lord a strong tower? Let’s start by declaring the name, which is Jesus. That name is higher than every other name and has authority over everything in heaven, on earth and under the earth. There is no power, no force, no authority that is higher than that name and that doesn’t have to bow to the name of Jesus. That name has been given to us for protection and for deliverance. Having the permission from Jesus Himself to use His name is like having a strong and mighty tower to run into when trouble comes. As a matter of fact, it’s even a lot better than that. To run into a tower for safety, you have to be near it and you have to get to it. With the name of Jesus, you are in the tower as soon as you call on His name. You run into that strong tower by calling out His name. The Lord hears you and instantly covers you with His protection.

As far as the matter of the righteous running into it, God has you covered there as well. Since the Word of God points out correctly that there is no one who is righteous (Romans 3:10), we would not be able to find safety in the strong tower of the name of Jesus if it weren’t for the fact that Jesus’ mission on earth was to take care of that glaring fault. He died in our place to pay the penalty of our sin so that we would be guiltless before God. In exchange for our sins which He bore on the cross, He gave us His righteousness. Based on the righteousness that we wear like a garment, we have access to the strong tower of His name. Praise the name of Jesus, who protects us and keeps us safe by the power of His name. There is no need to fear because His name is like a banner over us that instantly becomes a strong hiding place when we need one. Learn to call on the name of Jesus as soon as trouble even hints at coming to your door and be safe and secure in that name.
