John 18:37-38 (NIV) “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” “What is truth?” retorted Pilate.

Everyone wants to know what truth is. Not everyone believes the same truth. Some people believe that everyone has their own truth. But there are not multiple versions of the truth. There is only one truth. Something is either true or it is not true. When Pilate was questioning Jesus and Jesus told him that he came to testify to the truth, Pilate asked the question that many ask today. He asked, what is truth? That was a very good question to ask, but he never waited around for the answer. Pilate was face to face with the answer to his question, but he missed it and because he did, he lived out his life without the truth. Jesus was the Truth then and He is still the Truth now. But most people on this earth reject Jesus and thereby reject truth, preferring to live a lie. That lie will cost them their very life.

Jesus said very plainly who He was and He stated that He was not only telling the truth (John 8:45-46), but that He was the Truth (John 14:6). But this only made people very angry. Jesus still makes people angry. They get angry because they don’t want to believe the truth about Jesus. The Word of God, talking about the people who rejected Jesus, says that they exchanged the truth for a lie and worshipped and served created things rather than the Creator (Romans 1:25). The reason for that is that if they believed the truth, they would have to serve the Truth. They would rather live the way they want to, follow their own will and be free from anyone’s control. Little do they know that living that way makes them slaves to sin and ultimately, slaves and followers of Satan. They actually do his bidding without them knowing it, although some of them do know it and willingly do it anyway.

Jesus either told us the truth or He lied to us. But we know for certain that He spoke truth because He told His disciples that He would be arrested and killed and that He would be raised from the dead on the third day. Just as He said, He was arrested and crucified and He did rise from the dead on the third day, proving that He not only told the truth, but that He was and is the Truth personified. What is truth? Truth is Jesus. That Truth leads to the Way that leads to Life eternal, just as He claimed it would. If you believe the Truth, then speak that truth to everyone that you come in contact with that doesn’t know the Truth. The Truth will set people free, just like it did for you!
