Psalm 139:7-8 (NIV) Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
I have spoken to many believers who lament the fact that they feel that God is far away from them. I used to feel the same way until the Lord enlightened my understanding of His presence. Because of our fallen state, our feelings and emotions many times are not stable. Sometimes our thoughts and our feelings are all over the place. But one thing is constant and one thing is sure and that is that God is always present in the lives of His people. Whether we can perceive Him or not is another question.
The Lord Jesus promised that He would be with us until the very end of the age (Matthew 28:20). Think about that for a moment. This is Jesus, who is God incarnate, making a promise to you and me. Who would ever think that He was just talking flippantly or that He would ever renege on one of His promises. As the Word of God confirms, all the Lord’s promises are “yes” (1 Corinthians 1:20). Because Jesus promised to be with you, then it is up to you to believe it and receive it. Stop doubting in your mind that He is with you and your heart and your spirit will open up to be able to perceive His presence and His providence in your life.
In the passage of scripture above, King David seems to have had the opposite problem. His issue was that He couldn’t get away from God’s presence. It’s not that he was trying to get away from the presence of the Lord, but it was just that he was expressing himself to let everyone know that it is impossible to get away from God when you belong to Him. There have been many people who are children of God and who got away from Him through falling into sin. They were miserable in their sin because they felt the conviction of the Holy Spirit while they were backsliding. Many have tried to get away from the Lord when they were living in a sinful condition, but they found out that the Lord, often affectionately known as “the Hound of Heaven,” is a God who lovingly pursues and tracks down the human soul, even when that soul has tried to run away from Him.
Don’t spend another minute wondering if the Lord is with you. He absolutely is and there is nothing or no one who can keep Him from you. He is and always will be there!
