Philippians 4:22 (NIV) All God’s people here send you greetings, especially those who belong to Caesar’s household.

The Apostle Paul was in a prison in Rome when he wrote the Book of Philippians. He was put in prison for preaching the gospel. But Paul was not one to throw a pity-party and start complaining. Instead, he used his situation to encourage believers to not be afraid and to continue to spread the good news about Jesus no matter what. Christians took courage from Paul’s example, seeing his continued love for Jesus and his passion for sharing the message of salvation with everyone that he came in contact with, even though he was imprisoned. Paul used his trials and tribulations to bring glory to God and people took notice. This was so much so that in chapter four of the book of Philippians, he mentions greetings from believers from the household of Caesar.

Here the Apostle Paul was imprisoned in Rome where Caesar’s throne was and by God’s providence and will, he found himself in contact with people that were a part of Caesar’s household. That would include family members, servants, Roman guards and whoever else was a part of running Caesar’s household affairs. It is believed that Paul was under house arrest in Rome (see Acts 28:16-30). Paul wasted no time in proclaiming the gospel to anyone who would listen and the result was that even family members and others from Caesar’s own house became followers of Christ. God had an incredible plan to use His servant, Paul, to reach people that otherwise wouldn’t be able to be reached. He sent Paul into enemy territory (Caesar’s house) to save many who may not have ever been exposed to the good news about Jesus otherwise.

Whenever you find yourself in difficult circumstances or in a place that you didn’t necessarily want to be, ask God to show you how you can be a light to the people around you. It just may be that God has a plan for you to share the gospel in a place that needs to be infiltrated by someone who loves Jesus and who can spread His love wherever they find themselves. Who knows whose household you can affect as you put your trust in Jesus when you find yourself in uncomfortable and even undesirable situations. You might just be God’s secret agent to reach people who are in a place that was unreachable until you got there. People in Caesar’s household needed to be saved and God found the perfect way to reach them through the Apostle Paul. There are people that the Lord wants to reach near you and He just may use an unexpected way by placing you in an unexpected place to reach them through you.
