Matthew 6:33 (NIV) Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Have you ever gone shopping when you are really hungry? You wind up buying a lot more food than you intended to when you do. Worrying is just like that. If you worry today about tomorrow, you are just shopping for more worry than you need or can handle.

In Matthew chapter 6, Jesus taught the disciples about not worrying at all. The reason that He gave for not having to worry is because there is evidence all around us of how God provides for all of the creatures that He created, and that includes us. He taught that the birds don’t worry about what they are going to eat because the Father feeds them. He taught that we shouldn’t worry about clothing and He gave the example of the flowers of the field, which are here today and gone tomorrow, that are dressed so beautifully without working to clothe themselves. Then He gave the very best reason of all for not having to worry, and that’s because our Heavenly Father knows all our needs and cares enough to provide them for us.

But the truth of the matter is that most of us worry anyway, even though we love and serve God. We worry about today, tomorrow, next week, next month, and on and on. But Jesus was right on target in pointing out that worrying about things doesn’t change one thing about anything. What it does do is change things about our health, as worrying excessively leads to all kinds of health problems. Something to help you remember to put your trust in Jesus and not worry about tomorrow (or anything else) is to think about parenting. How would a mom or dad feel if one day they found their children cowering in a corner because they were worried sick about what they were going to eat that day or what they were going to wear? They would feel terrible and would ask the children why they were so afraid when they had always been provided for since they were born. Imagine what God feels when He sees His children so afraid and worried about their lives. Worrying is akin to thinking that the Lord will not take care of us as He promised that He would. When you think of it like that, you become more conscious of how the Lord has always cared for you, always protected you and always provided for you when you have abided in Him.

Let’s heed the words of our Lord and Savior and not worry about tomorrow, today or about anything else but instead, do what the Word of God tells us to do, which is to trust Him, lean on Him instead of our own understanding, and acknowledge Him in every part of our lives (Proverbs 3:5-6). It’s then that our eyes will be opened to see how faithful God has been to provide for us, which will give us the faith to know that He will remain faithful to do it until our journey here is over. Until that time, let’s learn to take one day at a time with Jesus.
