Song of Songs 3:3-4 (NIV) The watchmen found me as they made their rounds in the city. “Have you seen the one my heart loves?” Scarcely had I passed them when I found the one my heart loves.
The Song of Songs is a book in the Word of God that is frequently skipped or misunderstood due to its poetic and erotic content. But it really is an allegory of the amazing and incredible love story of God and the people that He created and loves, known in scripture as the bride of Christ. In the passage of scripture above, the bride was looking for the groom, but she couldn’t find him. She looked and she looked, finally passing by the watchman of the city and asking them if they had seen him. Shortly after asking them, she finds him herself and says that she found “the one my heart loves.”
The people in the world say that love makes the world go ‘round but they really don’t understand what love really is. In order to understand this powerful but mysterious thing called love, you have to come to know God because love comes from Him. Going further, the Word of God tells us that love not only originates with Him, but that He is love personified (1 John 4:7-8). That’s why you must know Him to begin to know love. The closest thing to pure love, although it falls very short, is the love between a husband and a wife. In Ephesians chapter six, the Word makes a comparison between the love between Christ and His church (the bride) and a husband and wife. The problem with the love between a husband and a wife, however, is that the love is between two sinful people who are very imperfect. If the two are followers of Christ, they have the capacity to experience love at a deeper level than most, but it still is no match for the love that God has for each one of us and the love that He enables us to experience for Him.
Our imperfect love for one another simply points to a greater love that we can know when we receive Jesus into our hearts as Lord and Savior. When that happens and you continue to seek after a deeper relationship with Him, your heart begins to experience what the bride in the story in the Song of Songs was experiencing. You really do experience that your heart has finally found the one that it loves. There is no love like it. And once experiencing that love that is too wide and long and high and deep to fully comprehend because it surpasses knowledge (Ephesians 3:17-19), that love enables you to love others, beginning with your spouse if you are married, better than you ever could have had you not found this One that your heart now loves. It’s an all-encompassing, life-changing love that that will bring meaning to your life as never before. Get to know Jesus deeply if you don’t know Him that way already. He is awesome and the one that your heart has been searching for all along.
