Psalm 119:11 (NIV) I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119 is a psalm that doesn’t have an officially known author but that some scholars believe was written by King David. The psalm is all about God’s Word and in the verses above, the psalmist reveals where the Word is most effective and activated: in your heart. The proclamation is that if you have God’s Word in your heart, it will keep you from sin. I have found this to be absolutely true in my life.
But it goes much deeper than that. You see, the Word of God is so much more than words on a page. God’s Word goes beyond the written pages of scripture. God’s Word reaches all the way to heaven, where the Word resides. John 1:1 tells us the following: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The Word is a person, and that person is Jesus. When you receive Jesus as Lord and Savior, where is it that you receive Him? You receive Him into your heart! So now let’s take another look at the verse above and see why it is so powerfully true. What we are actually doing when we choose to hide the Word in our heart is hiding Jesus in our heart. With Jesus in your heart, you are not likely to sin against God.
The heart is the control center for your mind, your emotions and your will. When you are commanding the control center, you are taking your life into your own hands. That’s like a ship without a rudder or a plane without wings. You are going nowhere fast without Jesus at the command-and-control center that is your heart, and “nowhere fast” is your best-case scenario. Usually, it’s crash and burn when we are in command. But when Jesus is there and in control because you willingly have placed Him there by surrendering your will and plans to Him, then not only will you not sin against God, but you will be an instrument for good in this world as He uses you to accomplish His will on earth. Put Jesus where He belongs, which is on the throne of your heart for a powerful, effective and blessed life!
