Deuteronomy 29:29 (NIV) The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.

As human beings, we want to know things. As a matter of fact, we want to know everything. We don’t like being in the dark about things. That is why the Word of God is so challenging to so many people. Many turn away from God and from His Word because they don’t understand everything, and there are things that there is no explanation for. For example, who can begin to fathom the answer to where God came from? The evidence that He exists is all around us (Romans 1:20), but who can know or explain His existence? God Himself tells us that we will not be able to understand certain things because His ways and His thoughts are so much higher than our ways and thoughts. It is somewhat similar to trying to explain quantum physics to a one-year-old. It can never happen!

There are things that only God knows for now. In our current state, we are not capable of understanding everything that God knows. That’s why those things are the things that belong only to God. I am sure that when we get to heaven, we will understand a whole lot more than we do now, although I can’t begin to imagine that we will ever know everything that God knows, because that would make us God, which we are nowhere close to ever being. He is one of a kind. There is no one like Him (Psalm 86:8)!

But there are many things that God has revealed to us. Those things revealed are for us. He revealed certain things to us for our benefit and for our blessing, but many are not interested in those things. They only want to know what is not revealed. Some use not having answers for everything as an excuse for why they don’t serve the Lord. Others, who say they follow Jesus, want to find out those secret things because they find it more interesting than living with the revealed things. The revealed things are the things that we need to live by and if they concentrate on the revealed things, then they would have to change the way that they live. Some go on a life-long quest searching for what they don’t know instead of living by what they do know. I know many people who are so interested in the end times and finding out or guessing or predicting when Jesus is coming back, but who are not living in obedience to the Word of God. God has not revealed to us when Jesus is coming back but what He has revealed is not only interesting, it is life-giving. What God has revealed is the pathway to life and the map that is going to take us from this life into eternity with Jesus forever and ever. Concentrate on the revealed things and leave the secret things to God. There is plenty in what has been revealed to keep you busy living it for the rest of your earthly life.
