Luke 6:46 (NIV) “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?”
Most people who become Christians have no problems receiving Jesus as their Savior but do have a problem either consciously or sub-consciously receiving Him as Lord. But Jesus didn’t die on a cross just to save you from the penalty of your sin, but He did it so that you would be free from the power of sin in your life that ultimately will destroy you. In order for that to happen, you need to make Him Lord of your life. That means that you no longer are in control of your life but have instead given control of your life to Jesus. He comes to live in you to give you the power to live a totally different kind of life than the one you were living before. This is so much so that the Word of God says that you become a new person (2 Corinthians 5:17).
We all have been guilty of doing our own thing after having given our lives to Christ. It was this very thing that made Jesus ask the question above of the people that were claiming to follow Him. This is a checkpoint for us as followers of Christ to see if we have truly surrendered our lives to Him. The Word of God calls us to examine ourselves to see if we are in the faith (2 Corinthians 13:5). The examination includes the Lordship of Jesus in our lives. When someone has truly been saved, the salvation experience comes with a desire to obey what Jesus commands. In other words, having your eyes opened to who Jesus really is and what He did for you is not just a mental thing where you just have acquired new and true information. It is a radical occurrence that leads to repentance, which is not only being sorry for the way that you have lived but that is accompanied by a desire to change course and head in a new direction. It is a 180 degree turn from the direction that you were heading in. It is accompanied by an overflow of the Lordship of Jesus into your life. You won’t resent it but will instead welcome it. While you still have to learn all that this Lordship entails, your heart’s desire will be to have Him as your Lord, leading and guiding you in the way that you should go.
Let’s make sure that we won’t have to hear the question above from Jesus because we are doing what Jesus said in His Word. Remember that all who do what Jesus taught and commanded are like people who build their house on a Rock. That house will withstand all wind, waves and storms that will beat against it because it is on the right foundation. Let the overflow of the Lordship of Jesus Christ flood your heart and soul for a safe and victorious journey through the rest of your life.
