Hebrews 10:14 (NIV) For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

As most of us have learned in life, there is no such thing as perfection. We can create incredible things with our God-given intelligence and abilities, but everything we do and everything that we create is imperfect. We may come close on some things, such as the great works of art from the famous painters and sculptors who have created masterpieces over the centuries but if you examine each work very closely, you will find the mark of human imperfection. That’s why the verse above is so astounding.

The truth of the matter is that the only One who is perfect, who can do things that are perfect in every way and can create perfect things is God. The Bible tells us that in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. When He finished His work, the Bible tells us that He saw everything He created and declared that it was good. That means that it was perfect. Even now, in the corruptible world that we live in because of the sin that entered in through Adam and Eve, the sun is still positioned in the perfect position and so is the moon. If the sun were a little further, we would freeze to death and if were a little closer, we would be fried to a crisp. The moon happens to be in the perfect spot to be able to control the Earth’s tides, which helps oxygenate oceans and support coastal ecosystems.

But one of the most miraculous things that God has done is to make fallen man perfect again. We were marred by sin and the corruption it caused in each person that is born into this world. We were, in fact, doomed to suffer the fate of any living thing that is separated from God. Since God sustains all life and He is everyone’s life-source, being separated from Him means that darkness and death awaits. But not only did the Lord rescue us by coming down to die a sinner’s death on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, but He provided a way for us to be perfect again, just as the first man and the first woman were before they sinned. But the miracle of it is that for those that have received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of their lives, he has made them perfect right now, even though they are still in the process of being perfected.

We are not done being transformed, but God has declared us perfect, whole and fully transformed while the process takes its course. He can do that because while we live under the constraints of time, God exists outside of the control of time. That means that since He knows the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10), He sees our perfect state now while we wait for that day when we see Jesus face to face and will become as He is (1 John 3:2). Since God exists outside of time, that day is now, even while we wait for it. That speaks to the incredible power of the sacrifice that God made for us through our Lord Jesus. We are perfect now in His sight while being worked on to be holy, or in other words, perfect. We are perfect before perfection! What a miraculous work! What a God!
