2 Timothy 1:12 (NIV) That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.

The Apostle Paul came to know Jesus in a very unusual way. While on his way to persecute Christians and throw them in jail, Jesus appeared to Him. The brightness of His appearing knocked Paul off of his horse and made him blind. After realizing that he was going against God Himself by persecuting His people, Paul had an incredible turn-around in his life. From that point on, he decided that he was not only going to follow Jesus for the rest of his days, but that he would also become a messenger, proclaiming the good news of the gospel to Jews and Gentiles alike. Because of this decision, he suffered greatly. The Jews wanted to kill him and many Gentiles mocked him. But Paul's testimony to Timothy, a son of his in the faith, was that he was more than okay because he knew whom he had believed. Knowing his Lord and Savior intimately gave him the courage, the boldness and the perseverance to face all sorts of dangerous and life-threatening situations, including being beaten and thrown in prison. But nothing could rock Paul's faith because he was sure of who God was in his life.

I believe that we as believers would do so much better when trials and tribulations come our way if we truly knew whom we have believed. To some, they know in whom they have doubted. When you are not sure of who you serve, then life becomes intimidating and precarious. Even if you don't necessarily doubt God, not knowing Him intimately will have you doubting yourself when it comes to making it through whatever trouble or circumstance you are facing. Life has a lot of trouble and there are many believers that are living in fear and depression because of it. But that is so unnecessary. When you know in your heart not only who Jesus is but who He is to you, then things look a lot different. Knowing beyond a doubt that the Lord loves you with a love that is hard to understand because of its vastness and that He is with and will never leave you (Matthew 28:20, Hebrews 13:5) not only changes the dynamic of your trouble but also changes the dynamic of your suffering. That's why Paul was able to write in 2 Corinthians 4:17, "For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all." Knowing all the trouble and danger that he faced, how could he have penned those words? It's because he knew whom he had believed.

Do you know whom you have believed? I mean do you truly know Him? Do you know Him enough to put your total trust in Him no matter what you are going through? Do you know Him to the point where you can worship and praise Him from your heart in the midst of the storms in your life? Can you lay worry and anxiety to rest and allow His peace to guard your heart and mind (Philippians 4:6-7) when life gets scary and chaotic? Get to know Jesus like Paul knew Him and you to will be able to face anything and still maintain your peace and your composure because you know whom you have believed.
