Exodus 4:2-4 (NIV) Then the Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?” “A staff,” he replied. 3 The Lord said, “Throw it on the ground.” Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it. 4 Then the Lord said to him, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail.” So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand.
When Moses went to check out a very strange sight while he was tending his father-in-law's flock, he never could have imagined how his life was about to change. It was a burning bush that was on fire but wasn't being consumed that captured his attention. As we know, God (the Angel of the Lord) appeared to him there. Moses was bewildered, but not as much as when He heard what God was asking him to do. The Lord wanted to use Moses to deliver His people from slavery in Egypt. Moses was coming up with excuses as to why he was the wrong guy for the job, but the Lord had an answer for each excuse. Finally, when Moses asked God what he would do if the people didn't believe that the Lord had sent him, God asked him the question above: "What is that in your hand?" Moses answered that it was a staff. He told Moses to throw it down and it became a snake. Then he told him to pick it up by the tail. When he did, it became a staff again. We now know from reading the full story that the Lord would use that staff in Moses' hand to accomplish mighty miracles, including parting the Red Sea when the people needed a route of escape from Pharoah.
God doesn't need much to accomplish anything. As a matter of fact, He needs nothing at all. He can just speak things into existence (that's how He created the world and everything in it) or He can make dry ground into a river or a river into dry ground. But He has willed it that we participate in His miraculous undertakings. Just think of how He used Moses to deliver God's people from Egypt. Do you really think that He needed Moses to do that? Of course not. But He has made it so that we can participate in His glory. In order for us to participate, He will ask us the same question: "What is in your hand?" Do you remember the story of the feeding of the 5000 men, not counting women and children? Jesus asked the same question back then. He asked what they had. In that case, it was five loaves and two small fish, and over 10,000 people ate from that meal.
Today, Jesus is asking you what is in your hand. What small thing, gift or talent do you have that you believe is way too small to even mention to Him. It doesn't matter how small it is or how insignificant you feel that it may be because when He decides that He will bless it in your hands to accomplish His will, then it will be just what He wants it to be. Don't ever think that you are too unimportant, too untalented or too anything at all to not be used. All Jesus is looking for is a willing vessel for Him to pour His power and love into for good on this earth and in the furtherance of the good news of the Gospel. What is in your hand? Put it in the hands of Jesus and then get ready for His glory!
