Proverbs 29:26 (NIV) Many seek an audience with a ruler, but it is from the Lord that one gets justice.

I have had the experience of watching some court trials and I have come away with the conclusion that justice is not always blind. In the New York Supreme court lobby, there is a statue of “Lady Justice.” She is blindfolded and is holding a sword in one hand and scales in her other hand. The blindfold represents the fact that no matter who someone is, whether rich or poor, important or unimportant, there is equal justice for all. The sword represents authority and power to punish injustice. The scales represent weighing facts and evidence to reach a verdict. While all of these things are excellent ideals, put them in the hands of humans, and everything gets tainted. They don’t always get tainted in every case (thank the Lord), but we all have witnessed many times during our lifetime that accused people who know powerful people and people who have a lot of money many times get away with what they did with either a slap on the wrist or with no penalty at all. It is really sad to see when people who have been wronged don’t get justice.

But there is one place where not only will you get justice when you go there, but it is the only place where only pure justice must and will always prevail. I am talking about going to the Lord for justice when we need it. Going to the Lord for help with injustice is the best thing that you can do. Although the Word of God doesn’t call seeking justice in the court system sinful, it is a very difficult and painful process. Even when you go to someplace other than the justice system (such as a supervisor of human resources), it is always a messy affair. You have to deal with the person’s ire and bad attitude of having been accused and perhaps even incur the wrath of others around them who think that you were in the wrong. Or perhaps the person in power themselves will take the side against you. Human justice is very tricky and unsure. But God is a just judge. He is not swayed or impressed with anyone. He doesn’t need a blindfold because he shows no favoritism to anyone (Romans 2:11). He doesn’t need a sword to show authority because He is all-powerful and is the supreme authority over everything and everyone. He doesn’t need scales because everyone’s sins are laid bare before Him. You cannot hide anything from Him, because He knows everything. On top of all of that, He loves you like no one else comes close to loving you.

Make the Lord your very first stop for seeking justice as He handles everything perfectly from start to finish. You will even have the added bonus of being corrected if you are actually the one in the wrong. The Lord will firmly but lovingly point that out to you. Even if you use other means for justice that are available to you in this life, make sure that you go to God first. He can give you the wisdom to navigate that as well as give you His peace and guidance during the journey.
