Hebrews 5:13-14 (NIV) Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
When we start our journey with the Lord Jesus after receiving Him into our heart as Lord and Savior, what should happen is that we begin to learn and grow closer and closer in our relationship with God. At first, everything is so brand new and our perspective is so radically changed that it takes our breath away. It is like a blind person being able to see for the first time. But because we still must live in this world and because we face temptations due to the weakness of our flesh, our growth many times is stifled or becomes stagnant altogether. This is a danger zone for us because the reality of following Jesus is that if you are not constantly moving forward, you will go backwards in your faith life. A good way to prevent that is by staying constantly in the Word of God.
The Word is spiritual food for us, giving us more intimate knowledge of our Lord Jesus while keeping our hope alive as we read and meditate of God’s promises to us. But it is more than reading the Word that keeps us safe. We must put the Word of God to use in our lives. It’s when we, by faith, begin to obey the commands and instructions of Jesus that we begin to grow as we should. It is only then that we can clearly see the difference between good and evil. The goal is to go from the elemental teachings about Jesus to the meat of the Word, which when applied, makes us more and more mature as believers. As evident from the current state of affairs of Christians in this country, a lot of them are at infant level. That means that they are not putting into practice what Jesus said. Jesus said that when we don’t put His words into practice, it’s like building your house on a foundation of sand. Obviously, such a house will not stand when troublesome times comes against it.
The Word of God goes from milk to solid food when you do what it says. When you put God’s Word to use, you activate the power that it is meant to have in your life. It’s not only imperative that you put it to use, but you must use it constantly. It must be your knew code of living, while trusting that Jesus will give you the will and the power to obey and use it as He dwells in you. Use the Word and live! Use it constantly to grow, mature and to become more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus!
