Deuteronomy 29:29 (NIV) The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.

I have met people who say that they want to go deeper in God. They want to learn more about the mysteries of the Word of God and want to dive deeper into the supernatural realm. So they leave where they are to go on a quest to be someplace where their desire to go deeper is fed. Many times, what is being fed is not good. In many cases, what is being fed and presented as deeper truths is extra-biblical. What that means is that the “truths” that are being taught and espoused are nowhere to be found in the Scriptures. They are either made-up, or they are things that God has left as mysteries that one day will be revealed to us. One example of a mystery is the Nephilim, who the Bible says were “sons of God who went with daughters of humans and had children by them” (Genesis 6:4). I’ve heard people make up their own doctrine about that and spiritualize something that is a mystery that we will one day find out about when we see Jesus face to face. Then everything that was not fully known will be made known.

In the meantime, we have what has been revealed to us. The way some folks go about things like this, it’s almost like they are bored with the revealed things and are looking for what they see as deep spiritual things that they find more exciting. But if you don’t find the revealed things exciting, there is something desperately wrong. The revealed things are the things that will bring us to the truth that sets us free in this world. Many of the folks who are looking to go deeper have not gone deeper with the revealed things. Make no mistake, the revealed things are deeper than we can handle on our own. We need the power of the Holy Spirit, our Helper, to not only understand the revealed things, but to be able to live by them. That’s where the rubber hits the road. There is no sense in knowing the truth but not walking in it. People that are looking for things deeper than the revealed word have not mastered the word that they have right now. Take the Sermon on the Mount, for example. Have you mastered that yet? If someone strikes you on the cheek, do you have the spiritual strength to turn the other cheek? How about when someone wrongs you or harms you in any way? Have you mastered the commandment to forgive seventy-seven times (Matthew 18:21-22)?

There is plenty to keep us busy and on our knees with the revealed word. Let's all make sure that we do not get distracted with the lure of “deeper mysteries” that God has not chosen to reveal to us at this time. Let’s leave the secret things of God with Him and let's ask Him to help us to live the revealed Word of God. When we do that, there will not be any time for mystery searches that don’t lead to growth in the knowledge and the love of Jesus and we will instead be caught up with the living and active Word of God that will produce real transformation in our lives.
