Psalm 34:15 (NIV) The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry.

When our boys were younger, we would take them to the park to play. We lived in New York City at the time and the parks there are always crowded with many children. The boys loved not only climbing on all of the equipment, but also enjoyed playing with the other children. As you can imagine, there was always a lot of noise. Kids love screaming for some reason when they play. But no matter how noisy it was or how many different children were screaming with delight, my wife and I could pick out any distress call from our boys even when we weren't directly looking at them. If a child cried out in pain or because they were having trouble with another child, we knew if it was one of our boys or not. The reason we were able to do this is because we knew the sound of their voices and we were attentive to their cry.

I believe the Lord, in His providence, gave parents the ability to pick out their child's voice above every other voice. He has given us the responsibility of watching over our children, even as He watches over us. I also believe that He gave us this ability because He wanted us to know that He knows our voice and is attentive to our cry. He has told us in His Word that He is listening for our voice, but He allows us to experience being able to pick out the voices of our loved ones so that we won't just know this truth in theory, but that it would be a reality that we live with that comforts us on a daily basis. It is so humbling to know that Jesus is not only praying for me (Hebrews 7:25), but that He is also watching over me and listening to any cry that may come from me so that He can be right there at the very moment that I need Him.

According to the PEW Research Center, there are currently around 2.18 billion Christians in the world today. Of course, that's made up of people who identify themselves as Christians. We'll know the real deal at the judgement seat of Christ, but let's just go with that number for now. That's a lot of children! I was pretty impressed with our ability as parents to identify our children's cry in a crowded inner-city park, but compared to our awesome God, that's nothing! He hears our cry above all the noise of the world, above the noise coming from people who are not saved, and above the noise of His many children all around the world. When you cry out to Jesus, He hears YOUR voice. He hears YOUR cry. He is attentive to it, watches out for it and picks it out from the massive throng of people in the world. What an awesome God we serve. Be confident today that no matter what happens, Jesus is as close as the very mention of His name coming from your mouth. He hears your cry.
