Psalm 143:10 (NIV) Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

One of the things that I have learned as I have gotten older is the value of level ground. When I was younger, I could navigate all sorts of uneven terrain and uphill climbs, although sometimes I would fall when I became too careless. But as I have gotten older, I greatly appreciate ground that is level to the point where I don't have to make an effort to remain on my feet. Add a little snow or icy rain and you will appreciate level ground even more.

The Bible talks about solid, level ground a lot. If it's important to stay on your feet without falling physically, it is even more important to stay on your feet without falling spiritually. Falling physically can obviously bring pain and injury to your body and that's serious. But falling spiritually brings not only pain and injury to your spirit and soul, but also has consequences beyond that and may very well affect others around you. That's why God wants us to find and stay on level ground, spiritually speaking. He is so good to not only admonish us to stay on level ground, but He also provided the instructions for how to find it and stay on it.

David was a man who knew the importance of level ground because he was a warrior and he knew the importance of having firm footing when you are in a battle. If you are off balance in uneven terrain, it is easier to get knocked down and then killed. I'm pretty sure he had that in mind when he penned the words above under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The Lord is letting us know that to find and stay on level ground, you must find and stay in the will of God. The will of God is pleasing and perfect (Romans 12:2). You can't improve on perfect. How do you find God's will? The Holy Spirit leads you to it as you surrender control of your life over to Him. David starts by asking the Lord to "teach" him His will. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would be our Teacher (John 14:26) and that He would guide us into truth (John 16:13) and let us know what's coming. That's level ground!

Make sure that you remain on your feet, standing upright spiritually, so that you will be able to fight the good fight of faith and do spiritual battle by finding and staying on level ground. Let the Holy Spirit guide you there as you seek God's will for your life.
