Psalm 78:20 (NLT) “Yes, he can strike a rock so water gushes out, but he can’t give his people bread and meat.”

When the people of God that had been enslaved by Egypt were set free through the Lord's miraculous intervention, it didn't take long for them to rebel. Just a couple of months after leaving Egypt, they got tired of waiting for Moses to come down from the mountain and had Aaron make a golden calf for them to worship.  Judgement came on the ones that led that rebellion, but the ones who remained weren't much better either. All they did was complain against Moses, and even worse, against God Himself.

In the scripture above, the people had already seen God do many amazing miracles and even admitted that God gave them water miraculously from a rock, but their stubborn hearts dared to say that God was not able to do something. Imagine telling the God who created the universe and whose breath you happen to have in your lungs to be even able to speak the words, "He can't do that." That sounds so terribly irreverent and foolish...except that if we are honest about ourselves, we have to admit that we have done the very same thing at times. Can you count the many times that God has forgiven you, delivered you, rescued you, healed you, provided for you, protected you, covered you, watched over you, granted you favor in any given situation, lifted you up when you were down, given you His strength when you had no more strength left, and a host of all the other things that He has done for you? God has done all of those things and more for all of us, yet we must confess that there have been times when a new storm has arisen in our lives that we have not had the faith to believe that God would be there to help us again. We run to this person and that person for help, we try to figure it our ourselves, and we murmur and complain, all the time forgetting all the times that God has come through for us before. It is just like saying, "Yes, God may have done those things for us before, but He can't deliver me out of this one!" Those words may not have come out of your mouth, but just being anxious and worrying about what you think is going to happen to you is like saying that phrase.

You may feel that this is a bit harsh to say but when you stack up all the verses in scripture where God states and reiterates that He will protect and deliver you and where He tells you to not be afraid, and then add to that all the times that He has been faithful to you in the past, then perhaps you can begin to see the picture. Doubting God is the same as saying that He can't handle your situation. But the truth is that there is nothing that is too hard for Him (Jeremiah 32:27). There is nothing that He cannot handle and there is nothing that will stop Him from helping you when you are in trouble when you put your full trust in Him. Don't ever claim, by either your words or by your actions, that God can't do something. Instead believe, and you will be the recipient of all of God's protection and blessings that He gives to those that love Him and trust Him.
