Psalm 141:3 (NIV) Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.

There are many things that we pray for, with most of them being things that we want God to provide for us or to do for us. When we start getting down to the nitty-gritty of our faith, we even pray that the Lord will do new things in us to help us to be stronger followers of Christ so that He can use us for His glory. But there is one thing that most of us fail to pray for and it's that God would set a guard over our mouth. Most of us just talk and talk without giving much thought to what is coming out of our mouths. We can be sure of one thing and that's that if we do a whole lot of talking, we will get ourselves in trouble. The Bible tells us that "when words are many, sin is not lacking (Proverbs 10:19)" and we have all found that out to be very true.

We get ourselves in a lot of trouble because of what comes out of our mouth. Have you ever been talking about someone and you didn't know that they were within hearing distance and heard everything that you said? Embarrassing and awkward! That results in hurt feelings and broken relationships. The way that we usually deal with that is that we try really hard to make sure that the person that we are talking about is not around. But did you ever stop to consider that if you are a follower of Christ, Jesus is always around and He hears you? The Bible warns us about speaking negatively about others because it displeases God.

We also speak out of turn with confessing negative things. For example, when something bad happens, do you immediately turn to God and ask Him for His mercy and help or do you start to complain and say things like, "I knew that this was going to happen! Where is God when you need Him?" Or how about when you get really upset and foul words start pouring out of your mouth? Did you ever stop to think that Jesus is hearing every single foul thing that you say?

As followers of Christ, we want to live right and we want to speak in a way that blesses God and others, but we battle against our flesh and we need supernatural help to keep our mouths in line. That's why it is so necessary that we continually ask the Lord to watch over our mouths. When confronted with the manifest presence of God in Isaiah chapter six, the very first thing that the Prophet Isaiah became remorsefully aware of was that he was "a man of unclean lips" (Isaiah 6:5). He thought that he was done for in that condition before a holy and righteous God. But the Lord, in His mercy, had one of His angels grab a live coal from the altar and touch Isaiah's lips with it, declaring him clean. Praise the Lord that He cleanses us, including cleaning our mouths, but it takes the Holy Spirit guarding what comes out of our mouths to continue to speak words of life and blessing instead of words of death. Let's ask the Lord to continually guard our mouths and lips. We need it!
