Psalm 119:24 (NIV) Your statutes are my delight; they are my counselors.

Life can get very difficult at times and because of that, many people make use of the services of counselors and therapists to help them deal with their troubles and issues. The problem is that the counsel they receive will only be as good as the wisdom of the person giving it to them. Also, if the counselor or therapist is not a follower of Christ, then what you will get is worldly wisdom, which most times will contradict what God says.

As good as it is to have good Christian counselors that you can go to, we have counselors available around the clock that many do not take advantage of. I am talking about the Word of God. The psalmist who wrote Psalm 119 had a lot to say about God's Word. He had so much to say that it became the longest chapter in the Bible and it is all about God’s Word. He calls the Lord’s commands, laws, and principles his counselors. That may sound a little radical to some folks but that is exactly what they are. That’s what God meant for them to be.

Many people look at the Bible as a book of do’s and don’ts and don’t really enjoy reading it. That happens when their heart has not been surrendered to God. It indicates that they really don’t have the relationship with God that Jesus made possible through His death and resurrection. He took our sins on the cross and died a sinner’s death so that we could be free from guilt and shame and be restored to a relationship with our Heavenly Father. Once we receive the salvation that Jesus offers us, that relationship with God begins. It is then that the Lord begins to reveal His Word to you and you see it for what it is, which is His loving guidance and instructions about how to live our lives in a way that will put us on the right path in life. The Word revealed becomes a multitude of counselors for every situation and for every different season of our lives...and it’s free! In the Book of Isaiah chapter 55, the Word itself invites us to a banquet of wisdom, instruction and guidance for life that has no equal. It has no equal because it is from the Maker of heaven and earth who also happens to be the one who made us. While it’s okay to seek help from a Christian counselor, the best counselors will counsel you directly from the Word of God because it is there that wisdom comes from. And here’s the thing, you can read it for yourself.

Let the scriptures penned under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit of God be your counselors every day so that you will steer clear of the traps and pitfalls of the enemy and of the lure of the world, which leads to trouble, pain and sorrow. The writer of Psalm 119 stated that he had more insight than his teachers and more understanding than his elders because he listened to and obeyed God’s Word. Let’s do the same. Let’s be safe and secure in the multitude of counselors that we have in the scriptures.
