Genesis 16:13 (NIV) She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”

When Abram and Sarai foolishly decided to hurry God's promise of having a son by having Hagar (Sarai's slave) sleep with Abraham, it caused a lot of heartache and trouble. She got pregnant and as soon as she did, she began to resent Sarai. This angered Sarai and she began to mistreat Hagar so badly that Hagar ran away. She wound up in the desert without any resources and with nowhere to go. That's when she had a personal encounter with the God that Abraham served. The Lord appeared to her and began to give her direction in her life, telling her to go back to Sarai and to submit to her. He then promised that He would increase her descendants until they would be too many to count. He gave her hope when she was hopeless. That when she gave Him the name, "El Roi," which means the God who sees me. She finally had seen the God who sees her.

What is awesome about this encounter is seeing the heart and compassion that God has for his creation. Hagar was not a descendant of Abraham through whom God's Covenant would be established. She wasn't very important either. She was just an Egyptian slave. With her not being among the future chosen people of God and with her being of no significance, why would God bother to appear to her? The answer is exactly because of the name that Hagar called the Lord. God is the God who sees you and me. That's so important to know because sometimes, we feel as if the Lord has forgotten us. When we go through trials and troubles, we many times lose sight of who God is and how He feels about us.

The Bible tells us that the Lord is always watching over us (Psalm 121:8). Always means always and forever. Even when you don't think that He is seeing you, He is seeing you. Nothing escapes Him and nothing gets by Him. If He saw and cared about someone like Hagar in the desert (she didn't even know Him as her God), how much more does He see and watch over you? But even more than that, He doesn't just see you, but He makes a way for you that will lead to His perfect will and plan. All you have to do is what Hagar did and follow His instructions, even if they seem difficult at the time. You can be sure that Hagar did not want to go back to Sarai because of the way that Sarai was treating her, but she obeyed and went back, and God fulfilled His promise to her. There are times in life when problems mount up and your spiritual vision gets clouded. When that happens, know that El Roi, the God who sees you, sees you and has everything well in hand regarding your life. He will manifest His presence in your life and show you what to do and the way to go.
