Psalm 31:3 (NIV) Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me.

The best way to go through life is by being led and guided in the right direction. Most people in the world live life by their own feelings and impulses, hoping for the best. But life has so many unexpected twists and turns that it is very precarious to live that way. We who are followers of Christ, however, have the ability and privilege to ask for God's leading and for His guidance. It takes a while for most Christians to realize that it is not a good idea to follow our own wisdom and our own way, but after repeated problems and failures, we surrender to God and ask Him to take the lead and to guide us through this life.

While this is a very good place to be, there is an even better position and perspective to be had and David had it. Mostly everyone who finally gets it and seeks the Lord's leading and guidance wants it for their own best interests and for their own benefit. We finally learn along the pathway of life that Jesus has our best interests at heart. As a matter of fact, His interests for us are so much better than our own interests for ourselves. So it makes all the sense in the world to let Jesus lead and guide your life. But what about God's interests? Do we stop to think about Him? Are we only thinking about our well-being when we ask the Lord to guide us? Is it the smoothest, least resistant path that we are looking to be on? God said in His Word that David was a man after His own heart and one of the reasons that he was so was because according to the Lord, David would do everything God wanted Him to do (Acts 13:22). In the verse above, we find David asking God to lead and guide him for the sake of His name. In other words, David was asking the Lord to lead him and guide him along the way that would have him on a path that would bring glory and honor to the name of the Lord. He wasn't asking for his own sake, but for the sake of the name of the Lord.

David's perspective on life in relation to God challenges us. While many of us have learned to love the Lord's guidance, do we love it because of the good that it will do us or because it will lead us towards going places and doing things in the providence of His will that will bring praise, honor and glory to the name of Jesus? The Lord didn't provide such a priceless salvation to us just so that we can have a quiet and comfortable life here on earth. He did it because He loves us, yes, but also so that His name would be glorified. And why is God interested in bringing glory to His name? It's because when He is glorified, the light of that glory shines on us, lifting us higher than we ever imagined. It is glorious to experience the glory of God and the way to get there is to be led and guided by Him for the sake of His name. Let's continually bask in His glory by being led and guided into His perfect will for the sake of His name!
