Colossians 2:19 (NIV) They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.

Everyone knows that without a head, the body is useless and dead. Not only so, but a body without a head is a gruesome sight, which is why the verse above is so sobering. The Apostle Paul, in warning the believers at Colossae that there were people that had come among them and were corrupting the true gospel, used the imagery of members of a body that had lost connection with the head. Such members are, by definition, not only separated, but lost and dead. What Paul was saying was that the only way for someone to be spewing false doctrine when they have the truth of the gospel in front of them is to lose connection with Jesus, who is the Head of His Body, the Church. To lose connection with the head is to lose connection with truth because Jesus is the Truth. These false teachers had obviously lost their connection to Christ, if they even had one to begin with.

So what are the implications of this verse for us? It's an admonishment to stay connected to our head, the Lord Jesus. There are churches today that have gone along with what the world says is new truth and are practicing and approving of things that the Bible says is sin. They are applauding practices and policies that are completely against what God has commanded and warned against in His Word. Some are even saying that the Word of God is outdated and that we have to evolve as Christians to fit in with the new order of things. They have obviously lost connection with their Head. They are headless churches, now serving the devil instead of Jesus. The sad thing is that they don't even know it. That's what happens when you lose your Head. There are also individual Christians that have lost connection with Jesus and are living contrary to God's Word. Some have lost that connection because they are practicing sin and others because they are practicing religion. I know people who have completely lost their connection to God while trying to get more knowledgeable in theology. While there is nothing wrong with theology, by itself, it doesn't lead you to a personal relationship with Jesus. Like it says in God's Word, "the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life." (2 Corinthians 3:6).

The best and only way to stay connected to Jesus is by constant contact. Just like my body cannot lose connection to my head for even a moment, so we cannot lose connection with our Head, Jesus. That means staying diligent and consistent in prayer, in reading the Word of God and in staying connected to the Body as well (going to church). Don't ever lose connection with Jesus because that will mean that you will quickly wander off the path that leads to truth and righteousness. We have no staying power of our own. We are completely dependent on Jesus for life and to maintain steady growth as a child of God. No matter what happens in life and no matter what you may face or go through, don't ever lose your Head!
