Ezekiel 3:10-11 (NLT) Then he added, “Son of man, let all my words sink deep into your own heart first. Listen to them carefully for yourself. Then go to your people in exile and say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says!’ Do this whether they listen to you or not."

Like many other prophets before him, Ezekiel was given the task of delivering God's message to His people. Usually, these messages were messages of warning because of the people's sins and rebelliousness. One distinction with Ezekiel was that God called him while the people of God were in exile. Ezekiel himself was also part of the exiled community that were in Babylon. So his prophesies came in the land of Babylon and they were meant to warn the people about their wickedness and turn the people's hearts back to their Creator and their God. Even though the Lord had told Ezekiel that the people would not listen to him, he was to give them the message anyway. But before he could give them the message, he had to get it into his own heart first. After doing this, then he could go out and tell the people the message.

Those of us that know the scriptures and like to tell others about them or warn still others about the seriousness of the Gospel message will not be able to deliver it properly unless it sinks into our own hearts first. Many people are really good at giving out the Word to everyone else but they are not good at living out the Word of God themselves. The Bible is first of all a mirror for you to see what your soul looks like, but we have a tendency to want to turn that mirror towards other people while ignoring our own image in the mirror. But before we can help anyone with any message from the Word of God, we must do what God told Ezekiel to do: get it in our hearts first. The Word of God just in your mouth has no power to it. The Bible warns us that the Kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power (1 Corinthians 4:20), and any of the Word that doesn't get into your heart first to do its work will be powerless.

God made sure that when Ezekiel was going to deliver His Word to His people, that it would be with strong conviction and with power. It had to be deep in Ezekiel's heart first before it could go out to anyone else. Allow God's Word to sink deep into your heart, first for your own benefit because the Word in the deep, good soil of the heart produces much fruit and second, so that all the people that you share the Word with will receive it with the power that God means for it to have. Let the Word go deep in you for powerful results!
